—SELF DEFENSE FAMILY "Self Immolation Family"
Self Defense Family - “Self Immolation Family”
End Of A YearSelf Defense Family have just unveiled the a-side to their much-anticipated new 7”, a track called “Self Immolation Family.” Recorded in Iceland last year and released by Deathwish Records in 2012, this record is the second installment in their intriguing “Island Series” of 7” records, which was started with the Jamaica 7” last year. This track bears the Icelandic influence well, with frostbitten guitar leads evoking post-rock and a glacial percussive pulse forming the backbone of the song. In his typically hoarse bark, frontman Patrick Kindlon paints an eerie, uncanny, and distinctly American landscape painting of American life, building up to a powerful and surprisingly melodic chorus of sorts. With a 6-minute runtime, “Self Immolation Family” stands among the lengthier Self Defense Family tracks, but it’s also one of the best. I’m not sure how the band themselves would take this, but I actually think this might be one of their more accessible songs.
If you’re not familiar with this band already, familiarize yourself now, and begin the arduous process of learning what’s so bizarrely and consistently appealing about them. They’re not easy to like, but they’re surprisingly easy to love. Trust me, it makes sense. Check out SDF’s always entertaining anonymous question-driven tumblr page and see for yourself.
